The Centre for Excellence in Rail Training (CERT) administers apprenticeships and traineeships in partnership with rail operators and employers.
The apprenticeship and traineeship system has undergone significant changes over the past decade. CERT staff understand these changes and can assist employers to ensure their operational needs are met within the framework of the training and assessment requirements that apply to apprentices and trainees.
Apprenticeships and Traineeships sit within a national qualification framework which means that qualifications gained are recognised through out Australia. The qualification framework also enables flexible pathways into training and on to higher qualifications if desired.
The key principles of apprenticeships and traineeships are:
- Learning and developing skills through hands-on experience,
- Workplace observations, and
- Formal training.
Formal training is 'competency-based', this means that apprentices and trainees are assessed on the skills they can demonstrate as either competent or not yet competent. Underpinning their skills, apprentices and trainees are assessed against learning outcomes on the tasks they perform and the knowledge they have gained that allows them to effectively do their job.
Apprentices and trainees can 'fast-track' their training by completing formal training at their own pace or through demonstration of current skills or knowledge acquired through previous work or study. This is done through applying for Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) with CERT during training.
CERT staff pride themselves on providing relevant, flexible, and innovative training solutions for apprentices and trainees in the rail industry.
